PLI: What, Why & How?

Updated: Feb 22

This post will break down what PLI is, why it matters, and how to get it for your business.

What is Personal Liability Insurance?

Personal Liability Insurance is financial protection that covers you if you’re held responsible for causing injury to someone at the market/event or damaging their property. For example, imagine a customer trips over your display and gets injured... Without PLI, you might have to pay for costly medical bills. Not something you plan for when setting out for a lovely market day out.

Why is PLI Important?

1. Protection Against Accidents

Markets can become crowded and accidents happen! If it turns out you are judged liable, PLI can help cover expenses such as the medical bills we mentioned earlier.

2. It Doesn't Just Cover Injuries...

PLI doesn't just cover injuries and one-off incidents. PLI actually also includes property damage claims and legal costs related to liability claims. For instance, if your artwork causes property damage, your PLI coverage will help.

4. Legal Requirement

In some cases PLI is a mandatory requirement. Various events (including our own markets) require stallholders to show proof of insurance for participation. If you show up without it, you may be turned away. It's always a good idea to check with event organisers beforehand!

How Can You Get PLI Through a-n?

Getting Personal Liability Insurance through a-n is designed to be simple and efficient. Here’s how you can secure your coverage:

1. Join a-n

Your journey starts with becoming a member of a-n (the Artists Information Company). Membership not only provides valuable resources but also streamlines your path to obtaining PLI.

2. Choose Your Coverage

As a member, you can select coverage that suits you. Coverage levels can range from £2 million to £5 million in liability limits, so make sure you consider your requirements carefully.

(To apply for our market, you must have coverage of up to £5 million)

3. Complete the Application

The application process is straightforward and done online. You’ll need to provide details about yourself and your work, but it can only take less than 30 minutes to complete.

4. Review and Pay

After submitting your application, you will see your coverage options - double check to make sure it meets all your requirement. Once you’re happy, just click to pay online.

5. Keep Your Documents Handy

Once it has all been confirmed, be sure to keep your documents handy. Download and save the PDF's somewhere sensible and keep them handy to send to event organisers.

That's it! If you have any questions please feel free to ask, we're happy to help!
